I love books!

Sophie has recently become fascinated with books. Her favorites are Mr. Brown Can Moo Can You? and Pekaboo I Love You. She also enjoys books with pictures of babies. She points at things in the books. Soph loves to be read to but sometimes she gets a little impatient and wants to turn the pages too soon! We are thinking of getting her the program My Baby Can Read. At first we thought it was just a gimic but we have friends who said that it really works. With a mom that's a teacher Soph is of course going to be in "school" before she is ever old enough to actually go!

Stand up

Sophie is just learning to crawl but I don't think it's going to last long because she's really getting interested in standing up and "walking." She enjoys playing with the stand up toy that her friend Taylor is letting her borrow. She also likes to hold onto your fingers and take steps and move around the house. She spent the whole day on Sunday "convincing" grammy and her great-aunts to do this with her! It's a good way to get a back ache. ;)

She passed!

Sophie has officially passed her first session of Water Babies. I guess that everyone in the class passed but we are still proud of her little certificate! She cried on the slide last night but in her defense yesterday was a tough day with teething. Overall, we had a great experience with swimming lessons and we're considering signing up again in April.

New Friend

Sophie has recently made a new friend named Taylor. We met Taylor and her mom Jessica at swimming. Taylor is almost exactly a year older than Sophie. She has been great at showing Sophie how to "work" the toys and I think seeing her move around has encouraged Sophie to start wanting to crawl and become mobile. Jessica and I have found we have a lot in common and enjoy play dates as much as the girls! We are both new to La Grande and don't know many people. We hope to spend a lot of time with our new friends in the future!

Scooting and Crawling

Just in the past few weeks Sophie has decided that she wants to move around more. She started by turning herself in circles on her bottom when she's on the floor. She does this so can can reach more of her toys. Then she started scooting on her bottom a few feet across the room. This is quite the sight! Sometimes it almost looks like she's doing the splits while scooting. It looks painful but she's so flexible I'm sure it's not. Just this past weekend she decided to start lunging and ending up on her hands and knees. Sometimes she gets one leg stuck under her for a little bit. She will rock on her hands and knees and then sometimes flop on her belly. We have discovered that she wanted the laptop that was sitting on the floor. We decided to use it to encourage her! So, we put it on sesamestreet.com and found videos of her favorite characters Elmo and Abby Cadabby. And sure enough she would do whatever she needed to get across the room to reach the laptop! Most recently we have noticed her doing a backwards sort of crawl. When she's on her belly she will push herself backwards across the room. She can also go from on her tummy to a sitting up position (which explains the time I found her sitting up in her crib!). Anyday now we expect her to take off crawling across the room. And then there will be no rest for mommy and daddy!

Music Class

A few weeks ago Sophie started Kindermusik class. There are 4 babies in her class. Sophie loves music! She also likes the puppets and "intruments." She was a little unsure of the drum that Miss Jamie brought out. By next week I'm sure she'll be fearless and beating on it! Soph has enjoyed playing with other babies and also learning the Peekaboo song and several others. During class the mommys learn a lot of baby development and activities we can do at home. Sophie likes to play with her friend Isaac. He's younger than she is so she's trying to teach him to sit up without falling over! Daddy was able to join us at music class this week since he had Presidents Day off of work.

Little Fish!

Sophie has been going to Water Babies swimming lessons for the past three weeks. She loves it! She likes to kick her legs and even splashes her arms around. By the second class she was brave enough to "jump" to us from the side of the pool. Of course she's in the sitting position so it's more like she leans and reaches for us and ends up in the water! Soph doesn't seem to mind water getting in her face at all and I've even dunked her a few times. At the first class I took her down the slide and she didn't cry a bit. But when daddy took her she wasn't a big fan...I think that he goes faster than mommy! ;)
